Flatten PDF form

Runs on your device

Turn the filled-in fields of a PDF form into part of the page, so it looks the same everywhere and can't be edited.

How to use Flatten PDF form

  1. Choose the filled-in PDF form.
  2. Select Flatten form.
  3. Download the flattened PDF.

Turn a filled form into a final document

A fillable PDF form keeps its answers in fields that any PDF app can still change. That is useful while you are filling it in, but not once it is finished: a field can be edited by accident, some apps show the answers differently or not at all, and some printers leave fields blank. Flattening draws each field's current answer onto the page itself and removes the fields, so the document looks the same everywhere and the answers are fixed.

Many offices, landlords, schools and government forms ask for a flattened PDF when you submit a completed form, and flattening is a sensible last step before you sign and send a document.

What happens to the fields

Text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons and dropdowns all become ordinary page content showing the value they held. Empty fields simply disappear. The rest of the document, its text, images and layout, is unchanged, and text you typed into fields becomes part of the page.

Before you flatten

Flattening can't be undone in the flattened copy, so keep the original form if you might need to change an answer later. If the PDF has no form fields, the tool tells you instead of producing an identical copy. After flattening you can add a signature with Sign PDF or a password with Password protect PDF.

Private by design

The flattening happens in your browser, using pdf-lib and pdf.js, open-source libraries that run on your device. Your PDF is never uploaded, so contracts, statements and personal documents stay on your computer. Nothing is stored after you close the tab, and there is no account, watermark or file limit.

It works offline once the page has loaded, in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone. Because nothing is sent to a server, results appear as fast as your device can produce them, even for long documents.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
Why flatten a form?
A flattened form prints and displays the same in every app, and the answers can no longer be changed by accident. Many offices ask for forms to be flattened before they are submitted.
Can I undo it?
Not in the flattened file: the fields become part of the page. Keep the original if you might need to edit the answers later.
